Just uploaded a video of Yshani Perinpanayagam‘s performance of my most recent piece Mr. Turquoise Synth for piano and 1-bit synth. The piece was written for Yshani (who is brilliant) and a synth built by Blake Troise (aka PROTODOME):

‘Mr. Turquoise Synth’ @ Turner Sims
On Monday 8 May at Turner Sims the fantastic Yshani Perinpanayagam will play my newest piece, Mr. Turquoise Synth, as part of her Piano Play: Power Up programme. The concert, which is part of the University of Southampton Music Department Professional lunchtime concert series, also features works by Cheryl Frances-Hoad and Southampton PhD composer Blake Troise (aka PROTODOME). Each of the pieces engages in some way with the sounds and tech of retro-gaming.
Full details here.
Here’s a short video of my piece from the rehearsal at Kammer Klang on Tuesday:

The Loop Project
This weekend I’m directing a weekend of performances and workshops exploring musical loops at Turner Sims in Southampton. First up is a a great (free) concert on Friday lunchtime featuring Liz Kenny and Ivo Neame and a workshop on Saturday morning.
The main event is on Sunday 5 February at 7pm features leading jazz musicians Ivo Neame, Jasper Høiby and Jon Scott performing alongside University of Southampton students in the HARTLEY Loop Orchestra. We will perform a major revision/adaption of my Loop Concerto, which was premiered by Ivo and Kent County Youth Orchestra in 2013. I’ve rescored the work for jazz trio and large ensemble and am super excited to see what the trio bring to the piece. Rehearsals have been going well and they arrive on Friday. Katie Harding from Turner Sims interviewed me about the piece for the Turner Sims blog here.
Also on the programme is the world premiere of Andrew Fisher’s Piano Concertino, Mozart’s Piano Concerto in D (after J C Bach) in which Mozart loops a J C Bach Sonata, and Gavin Bryars’ 1972 seminal work Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet.
Tickets are available from the Turner Sims Box Office:

Ensemble Paramirabo UK tour
Canadian new music group, Ensemble Paramirabo performed my The Circus Animals’ Desertion in Turner Sims as part of the University of Southampton Music Department’s Lunchtime Concert Series on Monday. It was great to have the ensemble here and they did an awesome job on my piece. They are also playing the piece tonight at a concert at Birmingham Conservatoire.
Elizabeth Kenny performance of ‘Extending from the Inside’
The amazing Elizabeth Kenny played my ‘Extending from the inside’ for solo theorbo at the Turner Sims recently. Her performance was up there with the very best performances of my work EVER!
Workers Union Ensemble Autumn Activities
I have just finished a mini-tour with the group I am fortunate enough to conduct Workers Union Ensemble. We performed at Turner Sims Concert Hall in Southampton, Birmingham Conservatoire and a final gig at LSO St. Luke’s in London. I can honestly say it has been totally brilliant to work with all in the ensemble and composers we commissioned on our ‘Constructing a Repertoire’ project. Can’t wait for future adventures!! For now here are some recordings from our Birmingham gig…
