Ensemble Paramirabo will premiere my new twenty-minute piece, The Circus Animals’ Desertion, as they launch their 6th concert season on 23rd September with ‘Blurred Boundaries, a concert dedicated to exploring music on the edges of genres.

Other works on the programme are pop-inspired works by New York Indie Classical stars Nico Muhly (Doublespeak) and Missy Mazzoli (Still Life with Avalanche), the Montreal premiere of Transported for amplified sextet and electronics by Toronto composer Rose Bolton and premieres by Montreal jazzers Philippe Côté and Karine Bétournay.

I am currently in the midst of a mini-residency with Rambert Dance Company in a collaboration with choreographer Melanie Teall. We are working on a new piece for two dancers and two musicians (piano and synth). The marvellous Edward Pick and Yshani Perinpanayagam are playing keyboards. There will be a ‘showing’ of the new piece in September at Rambert, watch this space for more information.

Piano Trio (with whistles), which was commissioned by the Deal Festival, was premiered by the fantastic trio of Maksim Štšura (piano), Michael Foyle (violin) and Raphael Lang last Friday. Here is a live recording I made at the concert at at the John Shipton Memorial Concert at St George’s Church in Deal. Many thanks to the trio, Markus Kinch for his photos and to all at the Deal Festival!

Blog about ‘The National Loneliness’

I’ve written a post for the Southampton Music Department blog about the recent performance of The National Loneliness by the London Sinfonietta, featuring Luke Wright and Juliet Fraser. I ended up conducting my piece and works by Emma-Ruth Richards and Jordan Hunt, which was really fun. Was great to write a new work with Luke and I hope we can work together again very soon.

London Sinfonietta Commission

I’ve been commissioned by the London Sinfonietta to write a new piece for solo tuba and distortion pedal. My new work, The Thing, will be performed by David Powell alongside four other new solo works at the British Film Institute as part of ‘Alternative Visions’ on 10th December at 6.30pm. The new pieces will be played alongside new films by student artists from Central Saint St Martins.
