Workers Union Ensemble will collaborate with New Dots on a project in April 2016. We will premiere new works by three composers selected from a call for scores: Monica Dalach, Camilo Andrés Méndez San Juan and Nick Morrish Rarity. We have also commissioned our current Composer-in-Association, Seán Clancy, to write us a new work. Keep an eye on Workers website for further details…

Rambert Mini-Residency: ‘Separately Together’
Earlier this month I had a great time taking part in the final stages of a mini-residency working at Rambert Dance Company.
The residency (thanks Rambert!) allowed me to try out an idea I had for a piece in which two dancers are paired with two pianists who perform on piano and synth. The new idea I wanted to explore was the idea that at the beginning of the piece the only people that can hear the synth playing are one of the dancers and the synth player. This allows the possibility for two clear visual choreographies to exist but the audience are not able to hear what is instigating the movements of one of the dancers. Later in the piece the synth material becomes audible and the listener is (hopefully) able to understand the choreography they have been seeing but not ‘hearing’. Well we tried this and I think the idea worked pretty well. I’m super grateful to choreographer Melanie Ingram, dancers Neus Gil Cortes and Chris Darmanin and musicians Yshani Perinpanayagam and Edward Pick for their patience and talent to bring it about! One of the great things about the project was the opportunity to show the work in an informal setting and receive feedback from an invited audience. This was a valuable process and one I’d be interested in exploring more in a contemporary music setting…
We made a video of the performance and I hope to edit it and upload it to Youtube fairly soon.
Zeros & Ones Video
Markus Kinch from Film41 has made an excellent video of my piece from the Workers Union Ensemble gig at The Warehouse in February…
Blog about ‘The National Loneliness’
I’ve written a post for the Southampton Music Department blog about the recent performance of The National Loneliness by the London Sinfonietta, featuring Luke Wright and Juliet Fraser. I ended up conducting my piece and works by Emma-Ruth Richards and Jordan Hunt, which was really fun. Was great to write a new work with Luke and I hope we can work together again very soon.
Workers Union Tour
Just got back from an excellent, but tiring, Sound and Music supported tour conducting the Workers Union Ensemble. Was great to play new works by various composers and to perform Simon Steen-Andersen’s On And Off And To And Fro four times. Here is a recording of my new work for the ensemble, Zeros and Ones:
Workers Union ‘On and Off & To & Fro’ Tour
Workers Union Ensemble have been selected for Sound and Music’s Composer-Curator Programme for 2014/2015, which is funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
We will tour Simon Steen Andersen’s On And Off And To And Fro (2008) for soprano saxophone, double bass, vibraphone and three players with megaphones alongside five new commissions. I will be on conducting duties as usual and will also pen a new piece for my Workers mates!
Workers Union Ensemble Autumn Activities
I have just finished a mini-tour with the group I am fortunate enough to conduct Workers Union Ensemble. We performed at Turner Sims Concert Hall in Southampton, Birmingham Conservatoire and a final gig at LSO St. Luke’s in London. I can honestly say it has been totally brilliant to work with all in the ensemble and composers we commissioned on our ‘Constructing a Repertoire’ project. Can’t wait for future adventures!! For now here are some recordings from our Birmingham gig…
Loop Concerto Photos
I had a great time on Saturday conducting KCYO in the premiere of my new piano concerto for Ivo Neame and the orchestra. It was a great pleasure working with the orchestra and to collaborate with Ivo too. Thanks to all at Kent Music and Geoff Dixon in particular and thanks to Martin Hines and Kent Music for the terrific photos too…
Rehearsals with Kent County Youth Orchestra and Ivo Neame
I was in Ashford this week working with the Kent County Youth Orchestra on my new piece for them Loop Concerto. It was great being with the orchestra for the week (just like old times) and excellent to work with the fantastic Ivo Neame on the piece. The work is for improvised piano and has relied on Ivo getting inside the piece. I’m really looking forward to the performance in Maidstone next week!
KCYO Concerto for Ivo Neame
I’m so excited to say I’ve been commissioned by the Kent County Youth Orchestra to compose a piece for their fiftieth celebration concert in September. I was in KCYO for many years so it is a great honour to be invited back. I’m going to be writing a concerto for fellow KCYO alumni and amazing jazz pianist Ivo Neame. He is a bit of a monster so I’d better get my best funk on!
The premiere will be in Maidstone on 7th September alongside Britten’s Sea Interludes and Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. No pressure then…
